Why go Paleo?

We’re often asked “why should I go Paleo?”  While there is no one-size-fits-all answer, there are many proven facts about the health advantages of the Paleolithic Eating Lifestyle.  Our journey with Paleo began a year ago as part of a nutrition and fitness challenge with our cross fit gym Oxfit.  The results that we experienced led us to completely re-vamp our pantry, our cooking style and lifestyle in general.  We both experienced sustained weight loss, reduced inflammation in our joints, less fatigue and more energy.  Sure the initial weeks are tough as your body is going through the detoxification process and eliminating all the excess sugar and carbs but once you are past the hump you don’t really miss it.   For us, the key to sustainment was finding a way to pack flavor into our meals so that we didn’t feel like we were missing out on dairy, sugar or carbs.

The Theory:

According to healthline.com, Paleo “emulates the diet of our hunter-gatherer ancestors, based on the premise that they did not suffer from the same diseases as modern humans.”

The Science:

In a study published in the Journal of Internal Medicine in 2013, researchers concluded study participants lost weight and had major reductions in liver fat as well as several improvements in important health markers such as blood pressure and total cholesterol.

In a 2009 study published in the journal Cardiovascular Diabetology, researchers concluded the Paleo diet resulted in greater weight loss and improvement in cardiovascular risk factors as compared to a Diabetic diet, which was specifically designed for patients with those diseases.

Paleo lifestyles do not include foods with a high “Glycemic Index”, such as rice, white potatoes, corn, and refined sugars.  These foods are known to cause a variety of unhealthy results after eating, such as spikes in blood sugar which can further result in increased body fat storage, weight gain, increased blood pressure, and diabetes.

The Food:

Adhering to a Paleo style diet doesn’t mean sacrificing flavor, variety or even the meals you love.  Unprocessed animal proteins and plants have wonderful, natural flavors and when combined with an endless bounty of fresh herbs and spices you actually feel like you are cheating when you eat our food.  At Yummy Street we create food experiences that highlight the season’s freshest local and organic harvests whenever possible.
